We borrowed the Moon!
Last week the science department at Nova were lucky enough to take part in the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) fascinating “Borrow the Moon” initiative. Tying in nicely with the 50 year anniversary of the first man on the moon students (and staff) were able to investigate actual lunar samples taken by NASA on some of the first Apollo missions! In addition, students were able to handle different meteorites provided by the STFC and National Space Academy and carry out experiments to look at their different properties.
The samples are priceless and uninsurable, so the school had to be checked out beforehand to make sure we had the correct levels of security; we were also not allowed to tell anyone about the loan until after they had been returned. This was definitely a unique experience and staff and students alike were thoroughly excited to have the opportunity.
“My favourite bit was holding the rocks in person and being able to look up detail about rare and interesting rocks and meteorites” Miles Year 8.
