Strong results in national junior maths challenge

Two talented Nova students have achieved gold awards in a national maths challenge, placing them in the top 10 per cent of entrants.

Fletcher and Mariia were among the 20 top Year 7 and Year 8 scholars who received accolades for their part in the Junior Maths Challenge, a national problem solving challenge completed by students all around the country.  They were both presented with a Gold Certificate and received an invitation to compete in the the Junior Kangaroo 2023 follow-on round on 14th June. This is a huge achievement and both scholars can be very proud.

Year 8 Mariia has entered similar competitions in her previous school in Ukraine, where she developed her passion for maths. For Fletcher in Year 7, it was the first time he's entered a national maths competition and he said he found the competition fun. "I was pleased to hear that I'd got a Gold Award and qualified for the next round. I'm looking forward to the next challenge to see how far I can go."

All the entrants received a certification of participation, and eight scholars had scores high enough to qualify for Bronze Awards. Two Year 7 scholars, Sapphire and Layla, received Silver Awards. Mr Watkins, Assistant Principal and Head of Maths, said: "This is a great achievement and we are very proud of everyone for their drive and commitment to maths."

The UK Mathematics Trust, founded in 1996, runs the UK’s biggest junior, intermediate and senior maths challenges, attracting more than 700,000 entries each year from more than 1,000 schools across the country. The Junior Mathematical Challenge encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.
