Olympic champ supports sports fundraiser
This week, pupils and staff across United Learning have been promoting the power of sport and raising money for charity. Nova Hreod Academy was delighted to welcome Olympic medallist Shelley Rudman to take part in a day of sporting activity to support RideABC, a 600 mile charity cycle ride stopping off at 25 United Learning schools along the way.
Shelley, who won a silver medal at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in skeleton, joined with the BTEC and GCSE PE students as they lined up on the red carpet to wave off the second leg of RideABC, before giving an inspirational talk to students and helping out with a sponsored Sport Relief Mile. Students in Year 7 and 8 had worked hard to raise as much sponsorship as they could for the charity, and really threw themselves into the challenge, a one-mile long assault course! It wasn’t all about the fastest runner as students were encouraged to take part in any way they could.
Shaun Dowling, Head of Sport for United Learning and RideABC cyclist said:
“We are delighted to be teaming up with Sport Relief this year for RideABC. We have already been overwhelmed by the support United Learning schools have given this project and are thrilled that so many of our students will have the opportunity to be involved in some exciting physical challenge activities, whilst raising money for two brilliant charities.”
