Musical award for Nova student
We were thrilled when Year 9 student Maisey Fry was named as the winner of the Musical Performance Award at the United Learning Best in Everyone Awards. The awards celebrate the achievements of the group’s students and teachers during the past year, and Maisey travelled with her family to accept the award at the ceremony, which was held at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds. The ceremony was co-hosted by women’s rugby legend Maggie Alphonsi MBE and European Featherweight Boxing Champion Josh Warrington.
During the ceremony, Maisey performed a rendition of Sam Smith’s “The Writing’s On The Wall” from the film Spectre, accompanied on the piano by Catherine Barker, the lead for Performing Arts across United Learning. The audience and hosts were bowled over by Maisey’s powerful voice, leading host and boxer Josh Warrington to comment: “she will be an X-Factor winner!”
Mr Gray, Head of Music, said: “Maisey has stood out this year for her extraordinary commitment to music outside of school through participation in the Wilkes Academy and Swindon Young Musician awards, as well as her numerous contributions to the musical fabric of Nova Hreod Academy. She is an exemplary ambassador for the Academy.”
Maisey said: “It was an amazing night and it was nerve-wracking to perform in front of so many talented people. Miss Barker was great to work with. It was a great experience and we all enjoyed ourselves.”
Jon Coles, Chief Executive of United Learning, said: “These awards celebrate the ingenuity, talent, resilience and excellence shown by the winners from across our secondary schools. We had numerous applications for each award and deciding which ones deserved to win was never easy given the quality of each nomination. The winners can be proud that their achievements have been recognised and assessed against very strong competition from across the country.”
