Graduation Day for Brilliant Club
Wednesday 3rd February saw the culmination of our young scholars’ hard work over the last 12 weeks as our Brilliant Club students enjoyed a rewarding graduation day at New College, Oxford University.
The group, made up of some of our most academically able Year 7 and Year 8 students, have been following a three month project with The Brilliant Club.
The aim of the Brilliant Club is to recruit, train and place doctoral and postdoctoral researchers in non-selective state schools to deliver programmes of university-style tutorials to small groups of outstanding pupils, which develop the knowledge, skills and ambition that help those pupils to secure places at top universities.
Since the opening ceremony at Warwick University we have been following the progress of the students in our weekly newsletters. Their PhD tutor has been coming into school and working with the group on a number of important world issues, opening the students' minds about subjects they might previously never have thought about.
We are delighted to announce that students Sam and Tierre both achieved a 1st in their assignments. This is a fantastic achievement for which they should be very proud! In addition, a special mention to Jayce who was awarded a Distinction for his performance in class and to Sam who has been awarded a Distinction for the highest mark on his final assignment.
After an information, advice and guidance session on graduation day, the students were treated to a tour of the beautiful college. They saw the remains of the city wall which runs through the campus and visited the chapel which was awe-inspiring and breathtaking!
After lunch, the official ceremony took place. The students’ names were read out individually and they each went to collect their certificates to warm applause and proud teachers and staff looking on. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all and the graduation day was a fantastic way to celebrate the hard work that all of our students’ have put in. Congratulations!
The students said:
“I enjoyed the tour because it was interesting to see how it was different to Warwick University. I also enjoyed the actual graduation part because it was exciting.”
“The trip to Oxford was good because it made me feel proud to have finished the Scholars’ Programme and determined to get into a good university.”
“I enjoyed the tour because it was very informative and interesting.”
“I loved the trip as it made me want to go to university! I loved the way New College was set out. I am pleased I took part in the Brilliant Club.”
We have been incredibly proud of all the students on the Scholars' Programme and grateful to our PhD tutor Susannah Deane and The Brilliant Club for allowing us the opportunity to take part in the programme. Thanks also to Mrs Loach and Mrs Wickens for their support of the group.
