Year 9 students experience a day at a top university
On 20th May, Mr Watkins took a select group of Year 9 students to experience a taste of life at a Russell Group University, when Cardiff University welcomed Year 9 students from all around the UK for a day of activities aimed at encouraging young people to start thinking about their future and setting the highest aspirations.
The day began with a talk from lecturers and current students of the University outlining the benefits of studying at higher education, particularly within one of the prestigious Russell Group institutions. The key message from this session was that setting your sights on the top level of education is within the reach of anyone who is willing to put in the hard work required.
Students were then introduced to the other side of student life through an interactive session with one of the university’s many social societies, where our students took part in a fantastic A Capella rendition of Imagine Dragons’ “It’s Time”. During this session, our pupils got a first-hand experience of some of the personal development and enrichment that university life can offer such as the choir, sports clubs and even Custard Wrestling!
The final session of the day involved a talk from industry leading researchers within the Business and Economics department of the university, culminating in a tour of their new £13,500,000 business suite including a replica trading room that students use to simulate the real world stock exchange.
Our Year 9 students were exceptional representatives of Nova Hreod Academy and managed to take away lots of valuable information from the session. One student went so far as to say that having attended this day they are now completely set on attending university, both for the academic opportunity and the personal development.
