First challenge for chess club
Nova students were delighted to welcome a team from Kingsdown School on Tuesday 5th December as opponents for Nova Chess Club's inaugural match. Lining up for the Nova team were year 9's Samuel, Edward and Jason, as well as year 7's Francesca and Ethan.
First to finish his game was Edward, who won with a swift and crushing attack, before clinching several victories in friendlies against other Kingsdown players. He was shortly followed by Ethan, who had gained early ground with the black pieces and made his pressure tell, securing another fine win.
Not to be outdone by his younger brother, Samuel also won, after eking out a winning advantage with the white pieces over a series of key middle game exchanges. Francesca put in a very strong defensive game against a talented opponent, although ultimately succumbed to defeat after a hard-fought match. Jason was the last to finish, having played a very tactical game where the advantage swung back and forth against one of Kingsdown's top players, although it eventually resulted in defeat. The final score was thus a 3-2 maiden victory for Nova. Congratulations on a fine performance to all!
Chess club is on Tuesday lunchtimes in FC9, look out for the school championship in the new year.
