Dyson Design Challenge
Nova students had an opportunity to work with James Pugh, a senior engineer from Dyson.
Lucky students in 8Ma3 took part in the Dyson Design Challenge, where they were tasked with coming up with a device that utilised the power of air to solve a household issue. Students began by brainstorming different ideas that could solve the frustrations found around the house, just as the Dyson engineering team operate. They then sketched their ideas and began to think about the logistics of constructing it. They then had the opportunity to build a prototype from Dyson parts and cardboard.
The Year 8 students were fantastically inventive, with ideas including vacuum cleaner shoes, an automatic pet feeder and a portable wave machine!
Year 10 Computer Science students also had a session with the Dyson engineer, this time focusing on career aspirations and working as an engineer at Dyson. James inspired Year 10 with his story of becoming an aerospace engineer in the Royal Navy, his time at University and his current role at Dyson working on Supersonic hair dryers. Students were particularly interested in the opportunities open to Royal Navy engineers, such as scholarships for University and fully paid ski trips!
