Considerate students help the homeless
A group of catering students from Nova Hreod Academy stayed late after school to prepare hot meals which they later delivered and handed out to the homeless in Swindon town centre.
Ingredients were donated by staff at the Academy after Mrs Moore came up with the idea to help the charity Alternative Angels, who provide hot meals for rough sleepers from the Wyvern Theatre car park. It was also supported by the local Morrisons store who made a donation towards ingredients. The group of 15 students gave up their time to prepare and cook vegetable pasta bakes which they boxed up and delivered, together with Christmas puddings and cream which had also been donated.
Year 10 student Ella, who went to the Wyvern Theatre car park to help serve the meals, said: “it’s nice to know that there is something we can to do to help, and make sure that people get a hot meal.”
Alternative Angels were very grateful to the staff and students for their generosity and said on their facebook page: “I think they found it very rewarding but also very eye opening to others within the community.”
This is the second time that students at the Academy have supported the charity; items of food and clothing were collected for a Reverse Advent Calendar at Christmas, and shared between Alternative Angels and the Swindon Caring Hearts Group.
Teacher Emily Moore, who arranged the donation, said: “I’m very proud of them all, they showed great maturity in volunteering to help others and they all took the task very seriously. When we took Ella, Pollyanna and Ellis to help hand out the food, we were all very moved by how grateful everyone was, and it was really worthwhile knowing that we helped to make a difference that day.
